THE MAIN STEP-BY-STEP WALKTHROUGH

Before you start reading this, get the following phrase into your head permanently: CTRL+ENTER. This is how you select songs and rooms.

1) First things first: Make an account in our forums Click here to create one. You need one to play. The name must be 12 letters or less, or else it will not work with SMO. Try NOT to make multiple accounts, because it only wastes space. Pick one and stick with it. Make sure not to use any special characters (namely Alt+Numpad characters) in your name or password.

You will have to login to the forums 1x to activate your server account! (keep in mind password changes also have to re-login to the website with there new password to become active in the server! This is for security reasons!

2) Install an SMOnline build from the website.

(Make sure it's installed into a different directory than your original SM game
[it supplies the folder "StepMania CVS", so use that] )

3) Second, make sure you have some songs to play with. Official DDR songs are hard to come by these days, but if you ask the right people, you could get them. For now, check out a thread from the SMO forums displaying where to get some song packs, located at our Downloads / Songpacks forum here on this board.

Follow the next step if you have songs in another installation of StepMania. If you don't, skip to Step 4b.

4a) Run either the "Play SMOnline" or "StepMania CVS" shortcut installed on your desktop. Let it boot up, then once you are in the game, quit the program. Doing so will create a Stepmania.ini file in the /StepMania CVS/Data/ folder. Open that file. Find where it says "AdditionalSongFolders=", and type in the location of your Stepmania songs folder (eg. C:\Program Files\Stepmania\Songs\). Save the file, then run SMO again, and your songs should load. If not, you did something wrong. When you are done and the songs are loaded goto step 5.

4b) This step is for those who don't have songs in another install of Stepmania. For you select few, download some songs. If they are packaged in a .smzip folder, unzip them to /StepMania CVS/Songs/. If they are bundled in a .zip file, or just by themselves, put the songs folders inside a generic group folder, like Originals. Have that group folder be inside the /Songs/ folder. Here is an example:
C:\Program Files\Stepmania CVS\Songs\Dance Dance Revolution 6th Mix -Max-\MAX300\MAX300.mp3
(inside the MAX300 folder should also be these: .mp3 [or .ogg], .sm OR .dwi [or both], and 2 .png files [optional] )

5) Now that you have your program and songs both set up, Load up the shortcut on your desktop that says "Play SMOnline". It will load your songs, then when the game pops up, goto Network Play and select server: connect.. in the box that pops up typ in: stepmaniaonline.eu and press enter you will see a message at the upper left saying "Connection to stepmaniaonline.eu Server successful", or something similar.
Also, if (for some reason) using the "Play SMOnline" icon doesn't work, go into your Network Options and Connect to: stepmaniaonline.eu

5b) Select Exit

6) Now you have SM running, ready with songs, and connected to the server. Now you must make a player profile, to save scores online. Make sure you make a player profile (in the main options under Profile Options), and it has to be the same name as your user account on the SMOnline forum, or else you wont be able to connect.

7) SM Running, songs loaded, server connected, profile made, and options set. Now, goto Game Start, and play.

8) Select your name, and then enter your password (It's the same as your forum password). Once that is entered, you will be in the main lobby of SMO.
